Methodology

Where these numbers come from

Every figure in this calculator traces to two sources: (1) Bellingham Painting Co.'s published local pricing, last reviewed and updated July 2026 — interior painting at $4.40–$8.25 per floor square foot, exterior at $2.75–$4.40 per square foot of siding — and (2) adjustment factors observed across our actual residential bids in Whatcom County. We do not use national cost databases; Bellingham labor rates, its cedar-heavy housing stock, and Pacific Northwest prep requirements make national averages misleading here.

Methodology snapshot: base rates from published Bellingham Painting Co. price schedule (reviewed 2026-07); condition and siding adjustment factors derived from internal bid records for Whatcom County residential projects; exterior siding area approximated at ~1.4× floor area for typical two-story construction. Figures are planning ranges, not quotes. Last updated July 2026 · next scheduled review with our annual Bellingham Painting Cost Report.

What moves the number most

What this calculator deliberately leaves out

Significant carpentry or siding repair, lead-safe containment on pre-1978 homes with confirmed lead paint, three-story access requiring staging, and HOA color-approval delays are quoted case by case. If any of those apply, the free on-site estimate is where the real number gets pinned down.

Common questions

Bellingham painting costs, answered

How much does it cost to paint a house in Bellingham, WA?

As of July 2026: interior repaints run $4.40–$8.25 per floor square foot ($4,950–$9,900 for a typical whole home). Exterior painting runs $2.75–$4.40 per square foot of siding ($4,200–$9,350 for a typical house). Cedar siding, heavy prep, and premium paint push toward the top of those ranges.

Why do Bellingham painting quotes vary so much?

Prep. Moss, mildew, chalking, and peeling are endemic to our marine climate, and correcting them properly can add 10–30% to an exterior bid. A lowball quote usually means the prep was skipped in the estimate — and it gets "discovered" later, or worse, skipped on the job.

Does cedar siding really cost more to paint?

Yes. Cedar absorbs coating, telegraphs tannin bleed through cheap primer, and often needs more surface repair. Most of Bellingham's older housing stock is cedar, which is why our calculator treats it as the local default — and why national cost averages undershoot here.

When should I schedule exterior painting in Bellingham?

The reliable window is roughly May 15 – September 30, when overnight lows stay above the 50°F cure threshold and rain-days drop off. Our Paint-Window Forecaster gives a month-by-month verdict.
